The comments centered on what happens to former military personnel after they receive their MBA and enter the business world (which was not a focus of the article).   Most said the article painted too rosy a picture for veterans about the benefits of business school: one â€Å"did not see [his] military experience as either helpful or harmful,† another pointed out that a military background proves no guarantee of leadership ability in the corporate world, and a third stated that â€Å"in most first jobs post MBA, you start as a lowly associate, not leading hundreds, or even a couple.†Ã‚   Others took issue with the values of corporate America, wondering why it â€Å"has a hard time understanding how to use ex-military people† and â€Å"cant figure out a way to tap our strength of making decisions in uncertainty.† I want to make two quick points in response.   First—and more to the theme of the article—military experience does help candidates get into business school.   Military personnel hold positions of high responsibility and leadership earlier than most people, and they develop a strong sense of discipline and teamwork as well, giving them traits sought by all business schools.   Military service is definitely a plus for MBA applicants; no doubt it played a role in my own acceptance to MIT Sloan. Many highly selective colleges, including Harvard, offer students the chance to participate in alumni interviews. In most instances, the evaluations from these alumni interviews arent given an incredible amount of weight in the admissions process and theyre as much to satisfy alumni (who seek to get involved in the admissions process) as they are to evaluate applicants. Not many of you in this room have a chance at getting into Harvard. If youre thinking about engineering, dont apply to Harvard. Just apply to MIT. During another session, this person said the following (as relayed to us): Just because you go to Harvard doesnt mean youre going to be successful. A lot of people I knew ended up failing. The role of alumni interviewers and alumni who give talks at high schools is to encourage students to applynot to discourage them from applying. And its certainly not to encourage these students to apply to a rival institution like MIT. And why would this representative of the Harvard Club of DC say such things? Well, this alumnus likely wanted to discourage students from applying so as to improve his own childs odds of getting in. After all, this alums child did apply to Harvard this past year and this student did earn admission. Harvard, we encourage you to better police who you have representing your school. Alumni should not be saying such things while representing your institution. Its not right and we encourage you to take action. Perhaps you should send out evaluations to students and school counselors at the end of each admissions cycle so that you can learn of these stories and stop them from ever happening again.
