Shame on Harvard June 15 Shame on Harvard College for not better policing their alumni representatives (photo credit: Chensiyuan). Harvard College, shame on you! Many highly selective colleges, including Harvard, offer students the chance to participate in alumni interviews. In most instances, the evaluations from these alumni interviews arent given an incredible amount of weight in the admissions process and theyre as much to satisfy alumni (who seek to get involved in the admissions process) as they are to evaluate applicants. That said, a student, for instance, who makes an offensive comment on an alumni interview can certainly jeopardize his or her case for admission. And its not just students who say the wrong things during the alumni interview process either. Over the years, weve heard many stories of alumni who say the wrong things. The really wrong things. And thats what brings us to  sharply criticizing Harvard. Highly selective colleges have alumni clubs in many geographic regions and indeed some folks  involved in these clubs, notably alumni club officers, have  got some power. In one such region, an alumni interviewer for the Harvard Club of D.C. who so happens to be the owner of a software company that created a program to not only match Harvard applicants to alumni interviewers but also has access to the interviewers’ evaluations of candidates for admission, has said some unfathomable things to students (as has been reported to us). In one such instance, this alumnus said to a group of students at a prestigious high school in the region (as it was relayed to us), Lets face it. Not many of you in this room have a chance at getting into Harvard. If youre thinking about engineering, dont apply to Harvard. Just apply to MIT. During another session, this person said the following (as relayed to us): Just because you go to Harvard doesnt mean youre going to be successful. A lot of people I knew ended up failing. The role of alumni interviewers and alumni who give talks at high schools is to encourage students to applynot to discourage them from applying. And its certainly not to encourage these students to apply to a rival institution like MIT. And why would this representative of the Harvard Club of DC say such things? Well, this alumnus likely wanted to discourage students from applying so as to improve his own childs odds of getting in. After all, this alums child did apply to Harvard this past year and this student did earn admission. Harvard, we encourage you to better police who you have representing your school. Alumni should not be saying such things while representing your institution. Its not right and we encourage you to take action. Perhaps you should send out evaluations to students and school counselors at the end of each admissions cycle so that you can learn of these stories and stop them from ever happening again.

America declares itself as the great country of liberty, the great country of opportunities and the great country of equality. As long as an American wants to marry a person of the opposite sex there seems to be no limits to their pursuit of happiness. Even in the progressive, modern year of 2015, the question of whether or not gay couples should be permitted to perform the act of a legal marriage divides the United States of America into two. Although more than half of the states have legalized gay marriage, fourteen states, including Kentucky, reject the idea of homosexual couples as equals to heterosexual couples. The fact is that an exclusion of marriage for gay couples is a limitation of their personal rights and is unequal, unfair,†¦show more content†¦It is discrimination to refuse to give the benefits that are provided to heterosexual married couples to homosexual couples. According to the General Accounting Office of the United States there are 1138 benefits and rig hts for married couples (cbo.gov). These rights include the right to visit a partner in hospital due to an accident or illness. Whether homosexual or heterosexual, partners should have the right to care for their loved ones during illness and misfortune. Another example, actually the worst case scenario is, if one of the persons in the same-sex partnership without being married passes away unexpectedly. If the deceased did not make his or her last wish, the consequence would be that the person left behind has no right to the belongings of the deceased, even though they build up a life together. These two were just a tiny portion of all the rights that married couples enjoy, same-sex couples however, have no access to them without being officially married. To deny these rights to a homosexual is simply discrimination. The concept of marriage has changed over time. According to Rose McDermott, a political scientist at Brown University, the traditional, monogamous concept of marriage between one man and one woman is a modern concept. In fact, two centuries ago polygamy was widespread and monogamy was an exception (McDermott).

The first time I took a college placement test was in December of 2015 at Bristol Community College. The test ultimately determines where students place in specific courses, such as arithmetic, reading, writing, and algebra. After months of preparation and anxiety, the pressure was on. Throughout my middle school years, I was a strong student, always on the honor roll. I never had a GPA below 3.0. I was smart, and I knew it. That is, until I got the results of my college placement test. Although the test was challenging, covering those four specific subjects of reading, writing, arithmetic, and algebra, I was sure I had passed every part. To my surprise, I did pass every part – except writing. â€Å"Writing! Yeah right! How did I manage to fail writing, and by half a point, no less?† I thought to myself in disbelief. Seeing my test results brought tears to my eyes. I honestly could not believe it. I had worked way too hard to score below the 3-point scale. Not to mention, scoring a half-point below it. I thought it was absurd. To make matters worse, most of my classmates from high school also took the test, and to my surprise again heard that they all passed, including some who were barely passing high school English. What an embarrassment I thought. How could I have failed, and they had passed that test? I was so much better at writing than they were, or at least I thought I was because I always got A’s on my English papers. What did I do wrong that made me fail, or in other words, what did I miss on the test that they got right and I got wrong? Until that time, I loved writing just as much as I loved math. It was one of my strengths. I was good at it, and I enjoyed it. If anything, I thought I might fail algebra. How could I have screwed up writing? I surely spelled every word correctly, used good grammar, and even used big words in the proper context. How could I have failed? This was definitely a debby-downer because I always knew I was a good writer and so did everyone else. Finally, I got over it and decided it was no big deal. Surely, I would pass the next time. In my honors high school English class, I worked diligently, passing with A’s. By the time I graduated high school, I knew I was ready for college and ready to conquer that writing test. Well, guess what? I failed the test again, again with only 2.5 of the 3 points needed to pass. That time I did cry, and even went to my advisor, Mr. Sanchez, and asked, â€Å"How can I get A’s in all my English classes but fail the writing part of the college pl acement test twice?† He could not answer my question. Even my friends and classmates were confused. I felt like a failure. I had disappointed my family and seriously let myself down. Worst of all, I still could not figure out what I was doing wrong. I decided to quit trying so hard. Apparently – I told myself – the people grading the tests did not have the slightest clue about what constituted good writing was. I continued to excel in class and pass the test on the third try. But I never again felt the same love of reading and writing. This experience showed me just how differently my writing could be judged by various readers. Obviously, all my English teachers and many others enjoyed or at least appreciated my writing. A poem I wrote was published online once. I must have been a pretty good writer. Unfortunately, the graders for the college placement test did not feel the same, and when students fail the test, the state of Massachusetts did not offer any explanation. After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing, and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about. Failing the second time made things worse, so perhaps to protect myself from my doubts, I stopped taking English seriously. Perhaps because of that lack of seriousness, I earned a D in the English 101 class at Bristol Community College, and was forced to retake it when I transferred to Dean College. I wish I knew why I failed that test, because then I might have written what was expected on the second try, maintained my enthusiasm for writing, and continued to do well. Then again, this has given me the opportunity to prove to everyone what kind of writer I am.

My good friend Jacob gave it to me because he had some extras. Then one night my power went out in my house and it was pitch black but I was able to use the lighter to light my way to my room. I kept in my pocket incase the power went out again for the next few days. Later I decided to keep it in my pocket as good luck charm. In conclusion, I have learned Throughout this project I have separated necessities from luxuries. Also, I have learned that I should take advantage of what is given to me.
